Super Junior’s Shindong reveals SM’s preposterous naming strategy

On the December 13 episode of SBS’s popular variety show Strong Heart, Super Junior’s Shindong released an interesting anecdote about SM’s strategy on selecting nicknames: “I was almost named as Woo Dong referring to noodle stripes in Korean.”
He evoked big laughs among the other guests by saying, “Before Super Junior made its debut, SM’s president Lee Su Man said that the name, Woo Dong, perfectly fits my funny image. Surely, I complained about the ridiculous name. Then he suggested another funny, countrified name, Dong Chun. Deeply disappointed, I brought forward my own idea with my current name, Shin Dong, but he went against me on the ground that Shin Dong is too plain to show my color. Then he suggested a compromise proposal, Shin Don. (Could mean new money or new pig)”
When other guests doubted if the anecdote actually happened or not, other guests belong to the agency supported it as a true story in chorus.
Shinhwa’s Jun Jin as well revealed a similar anecdote related to Lee, setting the table in a roar: “When we are preparing to make our debut, Lee suggested that I should be named by a strong name like Lee Gi Go referring to ‘Let’s win!’ in Korean.”
Shindong said, “Lee seems to like giving his singers characteristic names. That’s possible because his first-generation singers including Gangta and Jun Jin made huge successes with such distinctive names.”
Trax’s Jung Mo also disclosed a relevant interesting anecdote by saying, “I was once called Christmas. How could he…I also can remember that Yunho sang the blues to me years ago when Lee gave a name to his group ― TVXQ.”
