Psy's 'Gentleman' Release Strategy Was Not Well Thought Out

Soon after it was announced that Psy's latest single, "Gentleman," would be released worldwide on April 12 at midnight in each timezone, the song hit the internet and everyone was able to hear it.
New Zealand, because of their location, got the song first on iTunes - then (obviously) made it available for everyone else in the world to listen to.
What's with this release strategy? It seems like Psy and his record label YG Entertainment didn't think this one through all the way.
Psy, of all people, should know how the internet works, especially in terms of viral music. There are now thousands of YouTube channels with "Gentleman" uploaded, and the excitement of waiting is gone.
Not to mention, people can listen to and (if they so choose to) download the song illegally from a large array of websites hours before being able to legally download "Gentleman" via iTunes.
What is the point of staggering the release this way?
At least at first, making people wait for the song to be made available in their region, will significantly hurt sales. Those who have heard it and like it have most likely already gotten the MP3 from somewhere else.
It would have made way more sense to just announce one time to release it everywhere all at once. But what's done is done, but I can't help but feel like a kid who just found out Santa isn't real.
