The now global star Psy’s ‘Gentleman’ ranked #12 on Hot 100 of the American Billboard, and many are curious if he can reach the top on the same chart.
The world star’s previous song, ‘Gangnam Style’ was on number 64 of Hot 100 when it made its debut last year, and it quickly climbed the ranks to stand on number two for seven consecutive weeks. Unfortunately the YouTube hit was not able to reach the top. This is why all eyes are on the viral artist to see if he can stand on top this time with his new song, because he is 52 ranks ahead than when he was first listed on Hot 100 with ‘Gangnam Style.’
It would particularly be special if Psy is able to become the top on Hot 100, because it means that he will be the first Korean to be number one on Billboard’s main Singles Chart, and ‘Gentleman’ will be the first Korean song.
The expectations are building up for Psy, but things are looking optimistic. And the U.S. seems to be sharing the same optimism, the country that measures the ranks of Billboard Hot 100.
Paul Grein, who currently writes the Chart Watch blog for Yahoo! Music, announced ‘Gentleman’s newest rank on Hot 100, spotlighting the worldwide popularity of the South Korean artist.
He wrote that his current rank is “much higher than PSY’s breakthrough smash, “Gangnam Style,” which debuted at #64 in September.”
He added, “the phenomenal hit shot to #11 in its second week and reached #2 in its third week. Of course, YouTube streaming data wasn’t a factor in the Hot 100 back then, as it is now. The fact that such a massive hit as “Gangham Style” wasn’t able to make #1 (it logged seven weeks at #2) was no doubt a key reason that Billboard realized they needed to adjust their Hot 100 methodology.
He also wrote, ““Gangnam Style” was the first video ever to reach 1 billion YouTube views worldwide. It’s now up to 1.5 billion. “Gentleman” set a You Tube record by notching 18.9 million views in its first 24 hours on the site. It’s now up to 125 million.”
But he did not directly express whether Psy would be able to reach the top on Hot 100. But Grein did emphasize that ‘Gentleman’ has already gone viral and it was listed on Hot 100 much faster than ‘Gangnam Style’ did. It seems as though the blogger was subtly hinting that there is good chance for Psy to reach the top.
On the same day, Billboard wrote, “It is the second time that Psy has entered the main chart of Billboard, following “Gangnam Style,” which swept the global pop music industry last year. The new song launches at No. 1 on Streaming Songs with 8.6 million streams registered in the US in just shy of two days since its posting on Saturday.” It had an optimistic view – “the rise of both songs was apparently driven by huge popularity on YouTube. “ Billboard also mentioned that the streaming frequency of one week will be counted in and when the song goes on sale, then it can create a viral phenomenon within the top 10 of Hot 100. With these optimistic views, things are looking up for Psy.
‘Gentleman’ was unveiled on April 12 at zero hour in 119 countries, and in just five days it charted within top 10 of America’s iTunes Singles Chart. His popularity is prominent in the U.S. This record is also 55 days faster than his previous song, ‘Gangnam Style.’
Psy is coming up with new strategies as he lagged behind on TV show performances for ‘Gangnam Style.’ YG Entertainment, the agency to which he belongs, said, “his new song has been played on the radio since last week and he will be flying to the States to do more radio and television. People will see a lot of him.”
Billboard has been measuring the ranks based on Nielson BDS which includes factors like the number of performances on television shows, the number of singles sold (measured by Nielson SoundScan), digital music downloading and streaming. However, since February this year Billboard has been including YouTube viewer number and the frequency of UCC creation.
