THINGS ARE LOOKING UP FOR PSY: TOP 10 IN THE US + 100M YOUTUBE VIEWS – BILLBOARD’S TOP SOON?

‘Gentleman’, the new song released by Psy, is ranked within the top 10 in the U.S. and now all eyes are on the viral artist to see what he can show us on Billboard, the major international pop music chart.
His new song was revealed at zero hour in 119 different countries in April 12, and by the 16th it ranked number ten in America’s iTunes Top Singles Songs Chart at 9:10p.m. (eastern time).
‘Gentleman’ came within the top 100 just a single day after its release, and in four days it climbed up to 10. His previous song that helped him rise to global stardom, ‘Gangnam Style,’ took 60 days to be in the same rank. ‘Gentleman’ took him 56 days less than that.
He is already the top of iTunes in 40 countries, but the rank on the American one is especially meaningful as it has the biggest market.
‘Gentleman’ is gaining huge popularity in the U.S., like in many other countries, but many are greatly interested in his rank on Hot 100, the main chart in Billboard. Hot 100 takes into account the performance on iTunes, which takes up 80% of the total music market.
It was Psy’s dream to reach the top in Hot 100 with his previous song ‘Gangnam Style’, but Maroon 5’s ‘One More Night’ had put him on second for seven weeks in a row. Despite the very high frequency in online downloading and streaming, Psy was always behind Maroon 5 in number of performances on television shows.
There’s good news, however: Billboard is changing the way it measures the ranks. Up to now, Billboard has taken into account factors such as number of performances on more than a thousand TV shows (by Nielson BDS) and frequency of streaming and number of singles sold. But now they are adding YouTube views.
In fact, such changes in the measuring method helped ‘Gangnam Style’ climb up the ranks again. It is beneficial for Psy as he is well known for accumulating an enormous number of YouTube viewers. ‘Gentleman’ that was unveiled on April 13 raked in 100 million views in just four days. U.S. was the country that watched the video most frequently.
Because Psy was lagging behind in the number of performances he did on TV shows, he will be flying to the States to be more active on TV. Related personnel from YG Entertainment, the agency to which he belongs, said, “‘Gentlemen’ has been played on the radio since last week. He will be flying to the U.S. soon to be on TV and radio.”
Billboard will reveal its new ranks on Hot 100 in the early morning of April 19.
