Big Bang Will Have No Regrets Even If Popularity Fades
When was the peak for five-member group Big Bang? Is it now with its new songs Loser and Bae Bae becoming a hit around the world? The members shared their honest thoughts.
On May 4, Big Bang appeared at a press conference at the Conrad Hotel in Yeouido, where the members were asked if they think they′ve hit their peak.
“I recently talked to G-Dragon about this question,” said Taeyang. “We wondered if there was a reason to decide when our peak is. If we wanted to be like Michael Jackson, we wouldn′t be able to feel the satisfaction in our situation now. We don′t want to do that.”
“When people ask which Big Bang song is the best, I honestly want people say the next song,” continued Taeyang. “Personally, I think right now is the best time. We have experience and we have aged for the most part. I can′t say it′s our peak now, but I think we′re in the best condition to hit our peak.”
Big Bang returned as a group on May 1 with Bae Bae and Loser. Following a midnight release, the songs shot up to the top of the music charts in Korea, China and other parts of Asia, bringing up comments that Big Bang is hitting its highest point now.
“Instead of setting a limit and reaching for it, I believe there is a better thing out there if we go without deciding on anything,” said G-Dragon. “More than saying right now is our peak, we′re creating an album that′ll make us say ′Those were the best times,′ when we think about it in a few years.”
“Up to this point, today has always been better than yesterday. Truthfully, there′s no one in Big Bang who has the ambition to succeed,” added T.O.P. “We just love this so much that we′re enjoying it. Even as time passes and our popularity fades, we won′t regret it. We′re thankful to be even happy now.”
Big Bang Says Trainees These Days Don′t Really Know What It Means to Be Hungry
Now with almost 10 years of experience, Big Bang reminisced about its trainee days.
Gathering together as a group after three years, Big Bang carried out an interview with Newsen at a hotel in Yeouido as the members talked about their tough trainee years and gave some pointers to the trainees in YG Entertainment now.
Having debuted in 2006 with Big Bang, T.O.P was asked how he feels with the 10th anniversary coming up soon. “We never fought once. I don′t think time is really important right now. Maybe because we all lived without the concept of time, but we don′t think it′s important.”
“When we were trainees, our company was struggling. In the difficult environment, we struggled as well. Now the YG system has changed a lot, and when we see the kids learning under that scene, we think that it′s a difficult situation to learn about really longing something,” said G-Dragon and Taeyang.
“When we were young, we experienced that hunger so much. If we had received number one as soon as we debuted, we think we wouldn′t have kept that passion alive for long. We were a group that didn′t even get close to a number one for the first two years.”
Taeyang continued, “When we were trainees, we loved snacks. It would get hard during practice so we craved snacks, but we didn′t have money to buy them. So when we were filming the Big Bang documentary, we asked the PD to buy us snacks. If we ordered food more than once a day, we would get called in and scolded. We couldn′t spend more than 5,000 won each. We didn′t want to get scolded, so we ordered just enough. We still talk about that a lot.”
“Of course, financially, it′s gotten a lot better. We have more options to choose from. In a way, we might have held it all in to be able to do this now,” said G-Dragon.
After spending close to 10 years in the industry, Big Bang has gone through plenty of incidents and events. Have they ever thought about when their highest peak was?
“To a certain extent, it′s correct to set a peak, but we believe that we might have already passed our peak or that another peak may come. Because of that, we wondered if there was a reason to decide when our peak is,” said G-Dragon and Taeyang.
“If we wanted to be like Michael Jackson, we wouldn′t be able to feel the satisfaction in our situation now. We don′t want to do that. Instead of setting a limit and reaching for it, I believe there is a better thing out there if we go without deciding on anything.”
“If we look back now, we won′t know when our peak was. We think we′ll know if we wait a bit longer.”
Big Bang Talks ′Made′ Project, Stage Names and Unexpected Twists to Come
The Big Bang members looked back on the 10 years that they′ve been promoting.
After releasing its new songs Loser and Bae as part of its first project album M on May 1, Big Bang gathered for an interview with Newsen at a hotel in Yeouido, where the members talked about living their lives as singers.
Talking about the album Made, which will be released on September 1, Taeyang stated, “The album is complete and the results are very satisfying. I think our colors will definitely be more clear. Just because M came out first, it doesn′t mean that [these songs] are weaker or better songs. The CEO chose it for us based on the season and the promotional direction. We followed through believing in that.”
Regarding the comments that the songs Loser and Bae Bae are more geared to the public than before, T.O.P answered, “Big Bang is a public group so it′s right that we sing songs for the public. But we′ve never once thought about writing songs for the public. We focused more on creating good songs.”
“More than love songs, we focused mostly on the issues that our society is facing and how we look at society,” added Taeyang. “Even though we seem happy, we also have difficulties, and we wanted to have an exchange and sympathize about those things.”
All the members of Big Bang, minus Daesung, have promoted for close to 10 years with a stage name. G-Dragon′s real name is Kwon Ji Yong, T.O.P′s name is Choi Seung Hyun, Taeyang′s name is Dong Young Bae, Daesung′s name is Kang Daesung and Seungri′s name is Lee Seung Hyun.
“We have our real names, but we′ve been using stage names. The job as a celebrity carries a real name and a stage name, and depending on where the focus is, one side always gets lost,” explained G-Dragon.
“After 10 years of promotions, I think I′ve found a point that balances [the names] out for the most part. Just like many young people, we′ve also experienced that and we expressed those thoughts into songs.”
About the songs in the Made project, he added, “There are performance songs, and then there are songs of various colors. There will always be an unexpected twist. When asked why we came up with this kind of plan, the answer is always similar. We are affectionate towards all the songs and we want to film a music video for all of these songs, which is why we came up with this plan, but because the album styles were different, it was a bit of a free-for-all. We think it′ll be a single where you won′t have space to be bored.”
Beginning with M, consisting of Loser and Bae Bae, Big Bang will release new songs at the beginning of each month until August. The full Made will be released on September 1.
Big Bang will also embark on a world tour, visiting around 15 countries with 70 concerts and an estimate of 1,400,000 fans in the audience.
